Commonly used terminologies in Photography.
In photography, there are a lot of terminologies that are used to describe the process and the equipment. Here is a list of some of the most commonly used terms:
- Aperture
- Shutter speed
- ISO
- Lens
- Camera body
Let’s talk about the meaning and use of terminologies in taking better photographs!
Aperture: The size of the opening in the lens through which light passes to reach the sensor. A larger aperture lets in more light, while a smaller aperture blocks lighter.
You can use this to your advantage by controlling how much light enters the camera. For example, if you’re taking a picture in low light, you may want to use a larger aperture so that more light reaches the sensor.
Conversely, if you’re taking a picture in bright sunlight, you may want to use a smaller aperture to avoid washing out your image.
Shutter speed: The amount of time that the shutter is open, letting light reach the sensor. A longer shutter speed lets in more light, while a shorter shutter speed lets in less light.
Shutter speed is also important for controlling how much motion is captured in your image. A fast shutter speed will freeze action, while a slow shutter speed will capture blurriness and movement.
It’s about finding the right balance for your particular situation!
ISO: The sensitivity of the sensor to light. A higher ISO means that less light is needed to produce an image, while a lower ISO means that more light is needed.
ISO is important because it determines how “noisy” your image will be – that is, how much grain or digital noise will be visible. In general, you’ll want to keep your ISO as low as possible so that your images are clear and crisp.
However, sometimes you may need to increase your ISO if you’re trying to take a picture in low light or if you want to capture fast-moving action.
Lens: The piece of glass or plastic that focuses light onto the sensor. Different lenses have different focal lengths, which determine how much of the scene is in focus. Lenses also affect things like depth of field and perspective – two important factors in photography!
There are all sorts of different lenses available on the market today, so it’s important to do your research and find one that best suits your needs.
Camera body: The housing for the sensor and all of these other electronic components we’ve been talking about! Camera bodies come in all shapes and sizes – everything from small point-and-shoot cameras to large DSLRs (digital single-lens reflex cameras).
